Valentine Greeting

Valentine Greeting
This ornate valentine features hand-colored lithography on embossed lace paper, a luxury format popular among mid-nineteenth-century greeting cards. The central vignette depicts a formal social gathering, framed by decorative black foliage and topped with a lover's knot. Below, two cherubs hold a banner inscribed with verse. The delicate lace border and multi-layered composition typify the sentimental aesthetic of Victorian-era valentines, which combined fine printing techniques with elaborate ornamentation. Such cards functioned as affordable luxuries, allowing middle-class senders to express affection through mass-produced yet individually meaningful tokens.
