Portrait of a Gentleman
Richard Dighton, British, 1795–1880 · ca. 1870

This hand-colored lithograph by British artist Richard Dighton depicts a well-dressed man in profile, wearing a top hat and blue coat, seated upon what appears to be a whale. The figure holds a thin implement, possibly a harpoon or walking stick. Dighton was known for satirical prints and social commentary through exaggerated portraiture. The absurdist pairing of gentleman and marine creature suggests either caricature of a specific public figure or a more general commentary on Victorian pretension. The work exemplifies 19th-century printmaking techniques that would later influence comic illustration.
