Lake Scene with Trees
William Stanley Haseltine, American, 1835–1900 · 1880

William Stanley Haseltine (American, 1835–1900) painted this serene lakeside composition near Traunstein, Bavaria. The work demonstrates Haseltine's mastery of light and atmosphere, hallmarks of his career as a landscape painter. Bare trees frame a body of water rendered in soft blues and greens, with careful attention to foliage and reflection. Though working in the fine arts tradition rather than the emerging medium of newspaper comics, Haseltine's precise compositional technique and attention to natural detail reflect the same visual clarity that would soon define the sequential art form.
