Fisherman's Family

Eugene Higgins, American, 1874–1958 · 1910

Fisherman's Family
Eugene Higgins's etching depicts a boatload of figures—a standing fisherman with pole, a woman holding a child, and a small dog—navigating rough waters under a clouded sky. Rendered in fine cross-hatching and bold black lines, the composition captures a moment of labor and family interdependence at sea. Higgins, an American painter and printmaker (1874–1958), frequently turned to working-class subjects and maritime scenes, using etching's capacity for tonal depth and linear precision to render both texture and emotion. The work exemplifies early twentieth-century interest in genre scenes of ordinary life rendered with technical sophistication.
