Study of Female Model

Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 · c. 1885

Study of Female Model
This anatomical study by American painter Elihu Vedder demonstrates the formal training methods of late 19th-century academic art. The charcoal and chalk drawing on tan paper captures careful observation of the human figure—drapery, musculature, and pose—rendered with the precision expected of professional artists. Such studies formed the foundation of studio practice, developing the draftsmanship required for larger historical and allegorical compositions. Vedder, known for his imaginative illustrations and decorative work, employed these foundational techniques throughout his career in painting, printmaking, and book illustration.
