Le Journal des Dames et des Demoiselles

Jules David · 1857

Le Journal des Dames et des Demoiselles
This hand-colored lithograph by Jules David depicts a bridal preparation scene from a French ladies' magazine. Five elegantly dressed women occupy an interior salon: one adjusts the bride's veil while attendants in contrasting hues—green, white, and black—attend to final details. The composition uses spatial recession and architectural framing to organize the figures across the room. Such fashion plates served as illustrated instruction manuals for female readers, combining narrative sequence with sartorial documentation. The visual formula—recurring settings, recognizable character types, and episodic storytelling—would become foundational to the visual language of sequential art in print media.
