Two Studies of Capitals
Arnold William Brunner, American, 1857–1925 · 1879

Architect Arnold William Brunner's paired studies of ornamental capitals—one labeled 'Decorated Capital from Southern Marbler,' the other 'Romanesque Capital'—demonstrate the methodical documentation practices of nineteenth-century architectural training. These finely rendered drawings record classical and medieval stone carving traditions, showing how architects studied historical precedent through direct observation and careful sketching. Such studies formed the foundation of design education, allowing practitioners to absorb proportional systems and ornamental vocabularies before applying them to contemporary buildings. The delicate graphite work reveals the precision required in architectural drawing before photography became the standard mode of architectural documentation.
