Sketch of Chenonceaux

Arnold William Brunner, American, 1857–1925 · 1883

Sketch of Chenonceaux
Arnold William Brunner's architectural sketch depicts the Renaissance château of Chenonceaux with characteristic precision. This pen-and-ink study captures the castle's distinctive multi-tower composition and elaborate roofline, rendered in the detailed linear style favored by late-nineteenth-century architects. Brunner, an American architect trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, used such sketches as preliminary studies for design work and reference material. The notation in the lower right confirms the subject and date, documenting the artist's architectural practice during a period when American practitioners increasingly drew inspiration from European precedent.
