Seated Nude Study for Portrait of Helen Hamersley
Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1881

Daniel Huntington's academic study demonstrates the classical training that dominated American portrait painting in the late nineteenth century. This preparatory drawing, executed in ink with careful hatching, shows the artist's methodical approach to capturing form and proportion. The seated pose—a standard convention for portrait subjects—allowed Huntington to study the figure's geometry before translating it into the finished portrait. Such anatomical studies were essential to academic practice, derived from centuries of European training methods. The work reflects the rigorous technical foundation expected of professional portraitists before photography transformed the medium's purpose and practice.
