Jerusalem from Road to Bethany

Daniel Huntington's pencil sketch captures Jerusalem's skyline from the eastern approach, the vantage point pilgrims would have encountered traveling from Bethany. The composition balances topographic specificity—rolling terrain, the walled city's fortifications, distinctive structures including what appears to be the Dome of the Rock—with atmospheric handling of distance and light. Huntington (1816–1906) was among American artists of the nineteenth century who undertook Near Eastern travel to document biblical geography firsthand. This working study demonstrates the artist's method: careful architectural and landscape observation rendered through fine linework, establishing compositional depth while preserving the immediacy of on-site drawing. Such sketches served both as records and as preliminary material for larger exhibition paintings.
