Study of Mrs. Jay for 'The Republican Court' (Lady Washington's Reception Day)

Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 · 1860

Study of Mrs. Jay for 'The Republican Court' (Lady Washington's Reception Day)
Daniel Huntington's preparatory sketch depicts two female figures in period dress, rendered in ink and wash on paper. The left figure, shown in profile, wears an off-shoulder gown with detailed drapery; the figure on the right appears less finished, sketched more lightly. Huntington used such studies to develop compositions for his larger historical paintings. This drawing relates to his ambitious canvas depicting Washington-era society, part of nineteenth-century efforts to visualize early American social life. The work demonstrates the academic practice of multiple figure studies before committing to final compositions.
