Daniel Huntington's pencil study captures the rocky peaks and coastal terrain of Mount Desert Island in Maine. The artist employed horizontal compositional lines to establish spatial recession, with the mountain mass dominating the upper register and foreground vegetation sketched below. The lower studies—quick notational drawings of trees and shrubs—demonstrate Huntington's practice of recording natural forms for later studio use.
