Nippori, Temple Gardens

This woodblock print by Andō Hiroshige depicts a spring scene at Nippori temple in Edo (modern Tokyo), part of his series *One Hundred Famous Views of Edo*. Weeping cherry trees in bloom dominate the foreground, their pale blossoms rendered in delicate detail. Beyond them, the landscape opens to a verdant valley with scattered figures enjoying the season—some in bright kimonos, others walking or gathering beneath the trees. Larger pines and cherry trees frame the middle distance, while blue-green water and distant hills establish depth. The composition exemplifies Hiroshige's mastery of atmospheric perspective and seasonal observation, using selective color—pale pink, deep blues, greens—to create spatial recession. Published during Japan's Edo period, this print represents the height of ukiyo-e landscape art, which influenced Western artists decades later.
