Study of the Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist
This preparatory drawing by Italian artist Fortunato Duranti demonstrates the working methods of academic religious painters in the nineteenth century. The composition combines three figures—the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and the young Saint John the Baptist—arranged in a pyramidal structure typical of Renaissance and Baroque devotional art. Duranti's technique employs pen and ink outlines over watercolor washes of ochre and brown, building volume through hatching and tonal variation. The loose handling suggests this is a study for a larger work, allowing the artist to explore gesture, drapery, and spatial relationships before committing to finished form. Such drawings were essential to the academic training system that dominated European art institutions of the period.
