Sketch, the Virgin with the Child
Fortunato Duranti, Italian · circa 1850

Italian artist Fortunato Duranti's preparatory sketch demonstrates the classical training underlying nineteenth-century academic practice. This ink study, rendered with confident line work and cross-hatching, shows a Madonna and Child composition in an architectural setting flanked by columns. The loose, gestural quality reveals the artist working through compositional ideas—spatial relationships, drapery, and figural arrangement—before committing to a finished work. Such sketches formed the foundation of artistic practice, capturing both technical skill and creative process in the moments before a composition's refinement.
