Study for 'Herding,' The Progress of Civilization
Kenyon Cox's preparatory sketch for a monumental mural commission at the Iowa State Capitol demonstrates the academic training underlying American Beaux-Arts muralism. Quick ink studies of figures—here a herder with cattle—served as working drawings for large-scale public art. Cox's economical line captures anatomical essentials and compositional movement. These studies, often discarded after transfer to final surfaces, survive as evidence of the deliberate process behind turn-of-the-century public decoration, when murals celebrating labor and progress adorned state and civic buildings across America.
