Study for 'Science,' The Progress of Civilization mural

Kenyon Cox's preparatory drawing for a monumental mural at the Iowa State Capitol depicts an allegorical female figure of Science. Rendered in graphite with architectural grid lines for transfer, the composition shows the artist's classical training: the central figure holds a lamp of knowledge, flanked by studies of hands and draped fabric.
