Field with Rail Fence

Francis Hopkinson Smith, American, 1838–1915 · 1877

Field with Rail Fence
Francis Hopkinson Smith, American artist and author (1838–1915), created this tonal landscape study in graphite and wash. The composition demonstrates Smith's interest in atmospheric effects and rural American scenery—tall pines anchoring a hillside vista, a weathered fence dividing foreground from middle distance, and stormy skies breaking into light. Smith worked across multiple media including illustration, engineering, and fine art, establishing himself as a versatile figure in late-nineteenth-century American culture. Such landscape studies served both as independent works and as preparatory material for larger compositions.
