The Monkey and the Dolphin
Victor Wilbour · 1916

Victor Wilbour's illustration of Aesop's classic fable depicts a monkey riding a dolphin through stylized waves. The composition employs flat perspective and bold outline work characteristic of early twentieth-century book illustration. A fishing rod curves vertically at left, while decorative wave patterns fill the lower register. The figures—monkey, dolphin, and partial fish at right—occupy the upper portion against a spare background. Wilbour's linear hatching and color palette of greens, blues, and earth tones reflect the hand-colored printing techniques of the period. This narrative scene preserves the ancient fable's moral lesson through visual storytelling, demonstrating how classical tales were adapted and illustrated for contemporary audiences.
