Mountain Sketches

Frederic Edwin Church's rapid landscape studies capture rugged alpine terrain through economical pen strokes. The left panel renders a steep, forested slope with dense hatching; the right presents a broader vista of distant peaks and valleys. Church developed these sketching techniques during his extensive travels to document dramatic landscapes—from the Arctic to the tropics.
