Sun and Clouds

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · circa 1855

Sun and Clouds
Frederic Edwin Church's atmospheric study captures the artist's preoccupation with light and weather effects. Multiple cloud formations are sketched across the page with varying densities and directional marks, demonstrating Church's systematic approach to understanding luminous phenomena. The notations and linear perspective lines suggest this served as preparatory work for larger compositions. Church, a leading figure in the Hudson River School, developed such studies into monumental landscape paintings that dominated American art in the mid-nineteenth century, establishing the sublime natural vista as a defining subject of the era.
