Study of Clouds, Rome, Italy

Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · 1893

Study of Clouds, Rome, Italy
Francis Augustus Lathrop's watercolor study captures atmospheric effects over the Roman landscape. The composition demonstrates the artist's methodical approach to capturing transient weather phenomena—layered washes of blue, ochre, and mauve build volumetric clouds against a hazy horizon. Lathrop, an American painter and designer trained in France, used such studies as working material for larger compositions. This work exemplifies late 19th-century landscape practice, when artists traveled abroad to sketch and study natural conditions. The visible wear and institutional markings indicate its function as a working document rather than a finished exhibition piece—a glimpse into an artist's research process.
