Two Schooners

Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1880

Two Schooners
Winslow Homer's maritime study depicts three sailing vessels in profile against a minimal sepia ground. The composition employs a documentary approach characteristic of Homer's later work, with careful attention to rigging and hull form. The vessels progress from left to right in varying scale, creating spatial recession across the shallow picture plane. Homer's interest in nautical subjects reflected nineteenth-century American fascination with seafaring and naval life. This sketch demonstrates the artist's method of studying vessels and maritime conditions that would inform his later paintings. The restrained palette and linear execution suggest a preparatory work or finished study, part of Homer's sustained investigation of maritime themes from the 1870s onward.
