Figure Study

Robert Frederick Blum's ink sketch demonstrates the figure drawing that underpinned American illustration in the late nineteenth century. Working during the transition from wood engraving to photomechanical reproduction, Blum developed the fluid line work and anatomical precision that would characterize his contributions to periodical illustration. His studies of draped figures and costume—rendered with economical but expressive linework—became foundational to the visual language emerging in newspaper supplements and early illustrated magazines, where sequential narrative and character consistency would soon define the modern comic form.
