Trophy with Winged Hourglass

Romolo Achille Liverani, Italian · circa 1850

Trophy with Winged Hourglass
This intricate pen drawing combines classical allegorical imagery with Renaissance decorative tradition. A central urn overflows with botanical specimens—wheat, flowers, and herbs rendered in meticulous detail—while musical and agricultural implements radiate outward. The winged hourglass, a traditional memento mori symbol, crowns the composition, its curved scrollwork echoing the ornamental ribbons and drapery that frame the assemblage. The artist employs fine cross-hatching and precise linework characteristic of European academic drawing. Such composite designs served as models for engravers, sculptors, and craftsmen, circulating through pattern books and serving both decorative and emblematic functions in 19th-century visual culture.
