The King of the Cannibal Islands

This twelve-panel Sunday strip from the Omaha Sunday Bee exemplifies early newspaper comics' visual vocabulary: sequential panels, speech balloons, and escalating physical comedy. The strip's slapstick humor—collisions, falls, mistaken identity—derives from vaudeville and silent film, while its panel layout and pacing conventions established the grammar newspapers would use to build the comic book industry within two decades. By 1913, Sunday comics had become essential to newspaper circulation, employing distinctive house styles that made recurring characters recognizable across syndicates.
