Tenderfoot Tim Meets a Very Wild Grizzly Bear
A Sunday comic strip following Tenderfoot Tim and his companion as they encounter a massive grizzly bear in the wilderness. The strip employs sequential panel narrative to build comedic tension: Tim devises a plan to scare the bear with a scarecrow, but the ruse fails spectacularly, leading to a chaotic chase sequence. The artist uses bold black silhouettes of the bear against lighter backgrounds to convey scale and motion, while dialogue balloons advance both plot and humor. The recurring character of Tim—a greenhorn facing frontier hazards—typifies the adventure strips that populated American Sunday newspapers in the 1910s, establishing visual conventions of action comics that would define the medium for decades.
