Polly and Her Pals — Daily Strip

Cliff Sterrett's *Polly and Her Pals* ran from 1912 to 1958, making it one of the longest-lived newspaper comic strips in American syndication. This daily — titled *No Danger of Pa Choking, Either* — shows Pa confronting a man who has offered Ma a drink, demanding satisfaction across four tight panels. When asked what he did about the insult, Pa announces he "swallowed" it, landing with a literal *PLOP*. Sterrett's draftsmanship here is fluid and kinetic, his figures rubbery with expressive gesture. His later Sunday pages would push into near-Cubist abstraction, but these dailies show the clean panel-to-panel rhythm — speech balloons anchoring each beat — that newspaper strips established as the foundational visual grammar comics still use today.
