Polly and Her Pals — "Well, I Swan!" Says Pa

Cliff Sterrett's *Polly and Her Pals* (Hearst, 1912–1958) is one of the longest-running American comic strips, and this daily shows Sterrett's gift for domestic slapstick. Pa secretly feeds Polly's biscuits to a pond swan; a horrified Polly calls out to him; the final panel reveals the swan has sunk—weighed down by the baking. Four tightly composed panels, expressive silhouettes, and brisk speech-balloon dialogue drive the gag with no wasted ink. Sterrett later pushed the Sunday pages into near-abstract Art Deco design, but these dailies show the lean visual grammar—sequential panels, reactive characters, punchy payoff—that newspaper strips bequeathed directly to the comic book form as it crystallized in the late 1930s.
