Old Doc Yak: Whaler

This Sunday comic strip follows Old Doc Yak, a recurring character, through nine panels of escalating maritime mishap. A human and the anthropomorphic yak embark on a whaling expedition, each misunderstanding the other's intentions—the human seeks worms for fishing, the yak hunts whales—leading to comic confusion and physical slapstick. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that became standard in newspaper comics: numbered panels reading left-to-right, speech balloons conveying dialogue and thought, and sequential action building toward a punchline. Such Sunday pages, printed in color rotogravure sections of major papers, were the direct ancestors of the comic book format and trained readers in the grammar of sequential art.
