Old Doc Yak in the Movies
Old Doc Yak, a goat character created by Sidney Smith, starred in this Sunday newspaper page promoting his film adaptations. The strip pioneered the visual vocabulary later standardized in comic books: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and slapstick narratives. Smith's character strips appeared in major newspapers and established the format that defined early twentieth-century comics. The page demonstrates how newspaper strips functioned as multimedia marketing—the comic itself advertised Yak's theatrical releases, blending print journalism with film promotion. These Sunday pages, running serialized gags across multiple panels, directly informed the structure and conventions of the emerging comic book industry.
