Old Doc Yak
This Sunday comic strip follows Old Doc Yak, a goat character who encounters a man with a broken-down automobile. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that newspaper comics established in the early 1900s: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and escalating physical comedy. The narrative flows left-to-right across nine panels, using close-ups and wide shots to vary pacing. Doc Yak's attempts to help—or hinder—the motorist generate slapstick humor typical of the era. Such strips, appearing weekly in newspapers nationwide, reached millions of readers and established the foundational grammar of comic storytelling that would directly influence the comic books to follow.
