Old Doc Yak
· June 13, 1912

This Sunday strip follows Old Doc Yak, a recurring goat character, through a chaotic train journey. The narrative unfolds across multiple panels with expressive line work and dense action sequences typical of early newspaper comics. Speech balloons and visual gags—colliding passengers, mechanical mishaps, anthropomorphic animals—drive the humor. By 1912, newspaper Sunday pages had become laboratories for visual storytelling, establishing conventions like panel sequences and word-image integration that would define comic art. Cartoonists developed recurring characters to build readership and refined the visual grammar still used today.
