Oaky Doaks
· circa 1935–1940s

A medieval adventure strip featuring a young knight and his companions facing supernatural threats. The narrative unfolds across four panels with escalating action: King Cedric of Savaway announces a quest to destroy the Black Knight; the protagonist accepts the challenge with bravado; combat ensues; and the hero pursues his quarry on horseback. The strip employs the visual conventions established by newspaper comics of the era—sequential panels, speech balloons, dynamic figure drawing, and recurring characters in episodic adventure. Strips like *Oaky Doaks* populated the Sunday and daily pages that formed the immediate predecessors to the modern comic book, establishing the grammar of panel layout, dialogue integration, and serialized storytelling that would define the medium.
