Jumbo Junior
This six-panel Sunday strip follows a young elephant character through a series of physical misadventures. The narrative progresses from dialogue and confrontation through slapstick action—tumbling with round objects, colliding with a lamppost, and climbing a church steeple—building comic momentum through sequential panels. The strip demonstrates the visual grammar codified by newspaper comics: speech balloons for dialogue, numbered panels guiding reader flow, and exaggerated proportions emphasizing action. Animal-character comics were a staple of the Sunday funnies in the early 1900s, when newspaper comic sections became the proving ground for the visual language that would define the comic book medium.
