Jumbo Junior

This six-panel Sunday strip follows a young elephant character through a military adventure. Panel 1 establishes the War Office setting; panels 2–6 depict Jumbo Junior's misadventures during a beach landing, complete with chaos among soldiers and boats. The strip employs sequential narrative typical of early newspaper comics: discrete panels advance the plot, speech balloons carry dialogue, and expressive cartooning conveys action and emotion. By 1907, such Sunday pages were standard fare in American newspapers, establishing the visual and narrative conventions—panel layout, recurring characters, sight gags—that would define comic books decades later. The artist uses exaggeration and physical comedy to sustain reader interest across the sequence, a technique inherited from nineteenth-century chromolithographic supplements and perfected in daily and Sunday newspaper strips.
